From "help appraise":
Usage: appraise <victim|object>
When used on a victim, this command tells you approximately how much money someone has in their money pouch. It also returns some of the items they are carrying.
When used on an item in your possession, this command tells you approximately how much gold it would be worth in the shop when new. The range is: worthless, nearly worthless, worth a few coins, worth a handful of coins, worth a pouchful of coins, valuable, very valuable, extremely valuable, priceless.
Appraise is primarily a thief ability.
