A character is the "player object" that exists in the Two Towers MUD. A player controls her character through MUD commands, and she can create an in-depth persona for her character based on the vast options available within the MUD. Characters are encouraged to interact with others "in character" rather than "out of character"; however, since this is merely a suggestion, the line between a player and her character is often blurred.
A character has many attributes, such as race, gender, stats, skills, level and alignment, all of which affect gameplay. For instance, a character's stats will control how strong he is and how fast he can heal. The skills a character develops will determine his abilities. Alignment will influence which NPCs he can interact with.
Depending on his race, a character can choose from a variety of professions, which in turn allows the character to develop skills and gain abilities. As the character advances, he can join clans or guilds, and the player can socialize with others from around the world.

Players can have more than one character. In a perfect world, there should be an unbreakable line of separation between those characters, so that no one would know they are related through their player. However, this is not the reality, and player information is shared openly, if discreetly. When a player is known by their real name or by the name of their primary character, the lesser characters played by that individual are known as alts. Sharing a person's alts publicly is against the rules.

Pronouns related to the player are described as female while pronouns related to the character are male. This was done to differentiate between the two personas.
