From "help tradeskill cooking":
The cooking tradeskill is used for combining various food ingredients into marvelous recipes. To prevent you from making something quite awful, ingredients may only be combined to form specific recipes.
To use the cooking tradeskill, find yourself some cooking gear, a campfire, or certain kitchens, as well as the ingredients necessary for your recipe. The syntax is as follows: cook <ingredient 1>, <ingredient 2>, <etc>
Some recipes require specific equipment, and will notify you if you are lacking in that department.
Cooking takes a long time, and is an involved process. Most recipes will take upwards of 10 rounds. Each round, you will receive a message notifying you that you are still working on your recipe.
If you leave the room while cooking something, you will abandon it and the product will be lost.
If there is a recipe that you believe you should be able to make, that is not present, submit the recipe with an 'idea' report!
