[edit] MUD Definition
From "help tongues":
The common tongue is Westron; everyone knows Westron by default and starts the game speaking it.
Different races have their own specific tongues:
- Dunlendings speak Dunael
- Dunedain speak Adunaic
- Eorlings speak Rohirric
- Edain speak only Westron
- Hobbits speak only Westron
- Dwarves speak Khuzdul
- Silvan speak Silvan
- Sindar speak Sindarin
- Haradrim speak Haradaic
- Numenoreans speak Adunaic
- Olog-hai speak Black
- Uruk-hai speak Orcish
- Variags speak Variag
There are also special tongues which different species speak.
Black Speech is spoken by top servants of Sauron. Orcish is not
a language of itself, but is the term applied to the many tongues
of the orcs. Since the language varies from tribe to tribe, no one,
not even the orcs themselves, can know Orcish 100%. Certain races
of man who trace their ancestry to the far east may also speak
Easterling.
[edit] Training languages
Several language trainers across Arda will train players in languages - for a fee. The cost to train varies depending on the language and trainer in question. Wizards can temporarily increase their own language skills or those of another person with the comprehend spell.
[edit] History
Originally, players would see verbose descriptions of their skill in a language, without knowing precisely how much skill they had.
One of the first petitions asked that players be able to see precisely how much of a language they know. That petition was approved by Valinor and implemented.
Now, in addition to the verbose description, players also see a counter of how well the player knows the language. This counter is shown as a percentage. Each point of language trained increments the counter by one percentage point.
Languages trainers traditionally used custom code to train languages. Sometime around 2004, Valinor changed language trainers to use standardized training code. This limited the number of language-training bugs players reported, while retaining full functionality.
